LACAQLD, would like to offer an event highlighting the contribution that the elders from Spanish-speaking background in Brisbane have made to our society as workers, volunteers, carers and community members. “Latin American Seniors, Our Journey” will acknowledge and celebrate every senior’s journey in Australia. It will commemorate those things that they left behind; recognize the twists and turns they experienced in their new country; share their present; and look together towards the future. The event comprises a cruise along the Brisbane River as a metaphor to their life journey in this country.
Along the trip our elders will reunite with friends and elements of their culture while connecting with the beauty of the waters and land of the country we now call home. We will invite some elders to share their own journey in different creative ways. The journey will offer lunch, traditional music, storytelling to remind us of those who came before us and have helped to create our present.
We encourage seniors to attend in the company of a younger family member, not only to help ensure their safety but also to extend the intergenerational impact of the activity. Altogether the event will reinforce their identity and will further develop their sense of belonging and sense of community.
